Wychwood Barns: Our Community Hub
What makes a neighbourhood a community? There are so many ways to answer that question, but what it really comes down to is how the people living in the neighbourhood interact with each other, if they interact at all! In many neighbourhoods it’s the norm for people to keep to themselves, but in Hillcrest Village the sense of community is created by doing just the opposite. We have a great streetscape along with useful outdoor spaces, like Wychwood Barns Park, which draw people on to the streets and into the parks.
Wychwood Barns Park is the community hub for the Hillcrest Village community. It’s a huge park managed by the City of Toronto with the Artscape Wychwood Barns building sitting right in the middle. Artscape, the creator of the building,is “a not-for-profit urban development organization that makes space for creativity and transforms communities,” according to their website. They transformed a former TTC streetcar repair barn into what it is today: a community centre that provides a space for not-for-profit arts and environmental organizations. We guarantee that if you live at The Nest you’ll spend most of your Saturday mornings at The Stop’s Farmers’ Market (it runs all year round), which is set up in the building. They have so many vendors that sell a variety of foods – you can get your week’s worth of groceries there! It’s also a great place to bring the family and meet the neighbours which has really helped to establish the amazing community Hillcrest Village has become.
If you want to see what Hillcrest Village is like first-hand, come by Wychwood Park and Artscape Wychwood Barns every Saturday from 8AM – 12PM. After you hit up the farmers’ market, stop by our sales centre to check us out! We’re located at 784 St. Clair West and open until 5PM on Saturdays.
